Positioning Apprenticeships to support the Low Carbon economy
Session time slot
  • Session WE3 | Wednesday 17 March | 12:00-12:45
Synopsis
The transition to a low carbon economy means that Britain's growth will require businesses to have the skills to compete effectively in a global market whilst using energy and resources more efficiently. Part of the development of these necessary skills will come through the continued growth of the Apprenticeship programme.

Recent years have seen the resurgence in Apprenticeships across all sectors of the economy; a reflection of the value employers place on their role in the development of a skilled workforce through vocational learning. Last year 240,000 people started an Apprenticeship; a four fold increase over a ten year period. Equally dramatically the completion rate is at 70.9% an all time high. There are currently over 180 Apprenticeship frameworks available covering a significant range of job roles.

The challenge as we move into a low carbon economy is to develop Apprenticeships in such a way that they will deliver the specific skills needed in key sectors whilst supporting the carbon reduction agenda across all sectors. The government has made its intent clear in the National Skills Strategy, announcing plans to expand the Apprenticeship programme to deliver more opportunities for young people to develop the technical and professional skills the economy needs.

To support these developments we need to be focused on helping employers use Apprenticeships to the full:

What new Apprenticeships need to be developed to meet new skill needs facing employers?
How might we adapt existing Apprenticeships to reflect the changes within key sectors?
Can employers use Apprenticeships to reinforce and support the low carbon agenda?

Within this context the session will consider how Apprenticeships might be positioned to ensure they take a significant role in meeting the skills needs of the future.
