Education, skills and the nuclear industry
Session time slot
  • Session WE3 | Wednesday 17 March | 12:00-12:45
Synopsis
Following the recent resurgence in nuclear power the UK nuclear industry faces a growing skills gap. To put it simply, with nuclear professionals in demand to support, long term repository projects, decommissioning, the current nuclear fleet and new build, the nuclear industry needs more people. It also needs to help the general public gain a better understanding of what nuclear power can offer the UK (and globally), and why it truly is a safe, secure, stable priced, low carbon alternative to other types of conventional electricity generation.

Nuclear professionals come from a wide number of disciplines, but the common factor which most of us share is we all have Science Technology Engineering or Maths (STEM) skills. Recognising how important these are, the question is how does the industry best position itself to support the development of these skills in our schools? This round table will address this question and also consider and the role additional training can provide to fill the skills gap when entering the industry; from both a school level and for those already in employment .
