Encouraging employees to lead low carbon lifestyles

Synopsis
Ambitious reductions in carbon emissions will require significant investment and innovation, but importantly it will also require a significant change in employee behaviour. The discussion will focus on the following questions:

- How are companies encouraging employees to adopt low-carbon behaviour, both at work and at home?

- What initiatives have been most successful in engaging employees?

At Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) we have set an ambitious goal to reduce our carbon emissions in absolute terms by 15% by 2002. To engage employees, we now have a network of low-carbon champions actively involved in driving energy efficiency across all of our European manufacturing sites and offices. We are also encouraging our own employees to calculate and reduce their own carbon footprint. In 2009, several employees participated in a pilot carbon challenge within Coca-Cola Enterprises to track their own activities (including electricity use, travel and food) and reduce their own carbon footprint over a four week period.

Biography
Joe Franses is Head of Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability at Coca-Cola Enterprises Europe (CCE), which manufacturers and distributes products for The Coca-Cola Company (and a number of other brand owners) in Great Britain, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Joe oversees CCE’s corporate responsibility and sustainability strategy in Europe and is responsible for the company’s European CRS reporting and communications. He is also a Board member of the Corporate Responsibility Group.

Joe has been with CCE since March 2005 and previously held a similar CRS focused role with CCE’s team in Great Britain. Previously at Cable & Wireless, Joe is an experienced corporate affairs practitioner with over 15 years experience in managing corporate responsibility and sustainability initiatives.
